I received The Eclipse Book, in exchange for honest review. The book arrived with eclipse sunglasses. The book was written by Pat and Fred Espanak. Fred Espanak, also known as Mr. Eclipse, and Pat (Mrs Eclipse) compiled facts about eclipses in a 32 page book. The next expected total eclipse occurs on August 21, 2017.
The book discusses what a total eclipse of the sun is and the history of eclipses. A total eclipse is when the sun is blocked by the moon's shadow (umbral shadow). The author says you can see stars and planets during the daytime. The authors also discuss how plants and animals respond to the eclipse similar to how they respond to night: the plants close up and animals go to sleep. Each total eclipse begins with a partial eclipse. The book also provides excellent photos describing the relationship between the sun, moon, and earth.
Depending on where you live, will determine if you will see a partial eclipse or a total eclipse. My state, Texas, is not on the path of totality. Some cities on the path of totality include:
- Salem, Oregon
- Casper, Wyoming
- Nashville, Tennessee
- Charleston, South Carolina
- Kansas City, Missouri
The book includes a map of the path of totality on a map of the United States.
Next, the glasses provided helps protect your eyes. You need to keep them on until total darkness emerges. The book also teaches you how to prepare for an eclipse. Finally, the book provides a chart for total eclipse times in the path of totality and times for partial solar eclipses.
